There has been an Inn on this site since as early as 1493.The premises served as a principal coaching inn on the London to Norwich mail coach route.The two storey timber framed building which faces on to King street is the oldest part of the present building with the arrival of the railway connections to Thetford, Norwich and wider Norfolk the inn then was turned into a hotel.<\/p>\n

In the 17th century and 19th century further wings and extensions have been added with the west wing constructed in the late 20th century.<\/p>\n

Actors associated with the BBC comedy show Dad’s Army, stayed at the hotel when filming on location.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The hotel is reputedly haunted by the ghost of its 18th-century landlady Betty Radcliffe she has been seen to lurk in room 29.<\/p>\n

It’s claimed that her lover has also been seen lurking next door in room 30.<\/p>\n

The story goes that two lovers got into an argument one night.When her lover pushed her from the window onto the courtyard.<\/p>\n

Betty has been seen by various guests staying in that room standing by that very window. Room 29 has had guests feeling very uneasy the feeling of not being alone. Pillows have been moved on the bed at night and curtains have closed on their own.<\/p>\n

In room 30 staff have witnessed the chandelier moving and a hooded monk figure has been seen wonderthe corridors.<\/p>\n
