Description

Ghost Hunt UK return to this brilliant, popular location, for another investigation.

This building has seen a lot of history, having been knocked down twice in its lifetime and now being restored to what you see it as today. Its history starts in 1066, when William the Conqueror used Wisbech, among others, to establish his mark of authority but deeming it worthy of a stone fortress.

It stayed this way until 1236, when the castle along with the town were swept away in a terrible flood, which brought the castle down to ruins. The castle stayed in that state for half a century before being re-built and became one of 10 important buildings attached to the See of Ely.
In the late 13th Century Wisbech Castle became a state ecclesiastical prison, incarcerating Catholics in the reigns of Elizabeth, James I and Charles I and Protestants in that of Queen Mary. Many were executed and there are rumors that even the Gunpowder Plot was hatched at the castle.
The year 1658 saw the castle sold to the Right Honourable John Thurloe, who had the castle demolished and replaced with a most elegant house, which in The Restoration saw the mansion reverted to the See of Ely.
Then in 1792 it was put up for sale, and purchased by Joseph Medworth, a former Wisbech Charity boy who had succeeded in business. He offered it for sale to the Corporation for the use of the Grammar School, but they declined
Medworth had the Mansion demolished. Using much of the same materials, he managed to replace it with the regency villa, which stands today.
As you can see the Castle has had its fair share of historical changes, dating back to a time once forgotten. During its prison years, there are cases of plenty of deaths, executions and escapes, one prisoner was incarcerated illegally, and was so inhumanly gnawed by toads and other venomous vermin that his life was despaired of.
The years of disasters, changing of hands and the stone and bricks themselves have been destroyed, rebuilt and changed, but always trying to use the stones from the very first building. How much history and energy do you think this plot of land will hold?
Do you think the wronged innocent people would still be stuck here, forever wanting someone to hear their voices, or perhaps death gave them their freedom back? Do you think they may have stayed to warn others of the dangers they faced purely due to their religions, maybe you will feel a hand on your shoulder, stopping you from going where they fear?
Join Ghost Hunk UK and the team here for an amazing night of new discoveries! We look forward to you joining us.
